French Onion Soup

3 oz Margarine or Butter |
2 1/4 lb Onions, sliced |
1 1/4 gal Hot Water |
6 oz Xtra-Fine Beef Base |
25 slices French Bread, 1/2" thick, (optional) |
2 Cups Gruyere or Swiss Cheese, shredded (optional) |
INSTRUCTIONS
Slice onions 1/8″ thick and cut into 1″ chunks.
In a heavy 8-quart sauce pan, melt margarine or butter over medium heat.
Add onions and sauté 65 to 70 minutes or until onions turn a rich brown color, stirring frequently. (Caution: be careful not to burn the onions.)
Stir in water and Karlsburger “Xtra-Fine” Beef Base. Heat to boiling, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and gently simmer 5 minutes.
Serve hot, garnished with 1 slice toasted French bread topped with melted shredded Gruyere or Swiss Cheese (optional).
